but only a few people are making any serious money with it.

No marketing plan is complete without proper research, it can mean the difference between making money or losing it.

Most marketers rely on their feelings to decide what and how to market, the problem is that as marketers, we often are not our customers. It took me some time to truly learn that and understand what it means. I still struggle with it to this day.

For example, have you been attracted to an offer in the past, but after learning about it and understanding what it is, the offer does not grab your attention any more? That’s not to say that the offer is bad, or that it is not legitimate, it simply means that the mystery and curiosity that got your attention the first time is no longer a factor.

Now when you market a product, you might not realize the intrigue factor that a person would have if they do not know anything about the product. We tend to think, though not consciously, that it is too obvious. We forget what it was like to hear about something like this for the first time.

I have been a marketer long before the internet and the computer age, the ease and speed of implementation that we have today was but a dream in the past. Come to think of it, we didn’t even dream it.

Now you can test an idea and measure results in a very short time, sometimes the same day.

Even better, there are marketing tools that allow you to find niches and keywords before you even launch your marketing campaign. In the past I have used a program called Marketing Samurai with great success, it is $149. A small investment considering the amount of time and effort it can save you. I used to send out a couple of thousand letters just to see if an idea is feasible,  besides the investment involved, it took a long time to see the results.

If $149 is more that you want to spend, there’s another program that will give you similar results for a fraction of the cost, it’s called Keyword Spyglass. It’s a great program that I can recommend, the investment is so low that no one has an excuse to market without it, you get fast result.

Both programs give you the tools to streamline your research, sure you can do manual research to get similar results, but that would be insanity unless you have more time than you know what to do with.

What we have been exposed to the last few years is the introduction of real income producing ways to make money online and at the same time, scam artists who try and sometimes succeed in convincing people to give them money to teach them the so called secrets to make money online.

It may help you realize that online income is really possible if we translate it into offline world equivalent.

Affiliate Marketing;

Driving traffic to sales sites with your affiliate link for a commission.

If you work as a door to door sales person, and you sell a product, you will earn commission, it is not your product, you didn’t make it, you didn’t buy a large inventory of it, and you didn’t invest in it. Why would it be any different online?

Yes affiliate marketing is real, there are hundreds of thousands of people making not just a living, but a very comfortable living online with this method.

The Good

No investment in time or money in product creation.

Many brand name and popular products are available for affiliate commission sales.

Easy to track your progress and sales.

The Bad

Don’t think for a minute that this is a get rich quick method. In order to make money, you need traffic, lots of traffic. Traffic is not cheap or easy.

If you already have a site that gets a lot of traffic, adding affiliate links on it can produce income by tomorrow, but then you know how much time and effort it took to get that much traffic.

Warning

Online courses that teach you how to make money with this method are all over the internet.

If you shop around you will see sales videos claiming $1000 commission a day in earnings or more. You will see screen shots of their affiliate accounts showing you the money they earned. They always fail to show you their advertising account and how much money they spent.

All I am saying, it is not all profit, and I just wish they are honest and upfront about it.

I remember one product launch a few years ago, where it showed making $20000 + a month and it cost $14000 in advertising.  Now making $6000 online is not a bad deal specially that it is automated once you set it up, however, it is for people that do have $14000 to spare.

Can it be done?

YES.

When I started back in 2002, I was only making $76 a month online and it was costing me $24, it wasn’t a bad return on investment, but it wasn’t much.

The next month, I used the $76 to make $205, then I re-invested the $205 to make $400 and so on. The percentage will change, but done right, you will make money. Yes I do invest more money now, but the way I always look at it, it is money that I made from my initial $24.

The moral of the story, start now with what you have. Do not wait until you have thousands to invest. Start with $20 and multiply it.
